HOW DOES BILE WORK?

Among the various organic molecules found in Bile are water, acids, and electrolytes. The primary component of bile is bile acids, which are necessary for the digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. These acids also break down food and cholesterol and can destroy harmful bacteria. † [1]

The body eliminates waste, excretes cholesterol, and regulates metabolism with Bile. Around 500 mg of cholesterol is converted and eliminated from the body every day by bile acids. This process is known as hepatic synthesis. Through the duodenum [the first part of the small intestine beyond the stomach], bile is secreted from the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

TUDCA is also produced by bacteria in your body.

The liver bile duct releases bile salts into your intestines. The bile salts are then metabolized by bacteria in your large intestine into ursodeoxycholic acid [UDCA]. In order to create TUDCA, it is conjugated to a taurine molecule. The whole process occurs naturally in the body and is aided by a healthy level of bile salts. † [2]

Healthy people produce very little TUDCA, recycling nearly 95% of their biliary salts through enterohepatic circulation, which has bile entering the intestines and returning to the liver via the portal vein. The process can be impaired by poor diet, liver dysfunction, and certain medications.

UDCA AND TUDCA BILE SALTS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Bile acids are derived from cholesterol in the liver. UDCA is conjugated with taurine to form TUDCA in the liver as bile acids circulate [via enterohepatic circulation]. This process prevents apoptosis [aka cell death] as well as endoplasmic reticulum [ER] stress.

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid is referred to as TUDCA, while ursodeoxycholic acid is known as UDCA. UDCA is the more common form of bile salts, but they are both salts of bile. Intestinal microbiota [gut flora] make UDCA first when they make secondary bile acids. UDCA is metabolized in the lower intestine by binding to taurine to form TUDCA. † [3]

TUDCA is naturally produced by the body, but in very small amounts, since most of your bile salts are recycled and recirculated. You can further slow down your body’s natural production of TUDCA by:
