CHEMICAL TudGenesis™- TUDCA

CHEMICAL TudGenesis™- TUDCA – The bile acid derivative tauroursodeoxycholic acid, or TUDCA, occurs in the body naturally. Traditional Chinese medicine has used it for millennia to treat hepatic and biliary disorders.

What is TUDCA?

The bile acid derivative tauroursodeoxycholic acid, or TUDCA, occurs in the body naturally. Traditional Chinese medicine has used it for millennia to treat hepatic and biliary disorders. Bile salt is a health-giving compound made by our bodies in small amounts, which impacts many bodily functions, including the health of the brain, kidneys, and eyes.

TUDCA has been known by traditional Chinese doctors for ages to help detoxify the liver, treat "heat illnesses" such as fever, spasms, and vision problems, and improve many other conditions. Despite this, it's just recently gained scientific attention, and scientists are studying its many health benefits as part of recent clinical trials (1).

How does Bile work?

Bile is a complex fluid composed of water, acids, electrolytes, and other organic compounds. Among bile's most important functions are digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. It can also destroy harmful bacteria, as well as break down food and cholesterol (2).

The body eliminates waste, excretes cholesterol, and regulates metabolism with Bile. The body eliminates around 500 mg of cholesterol every day through the action of bile acids. This is known as hepatic synthesis. Bile is produced by the liver, which is stored in the gallbladder. It is then released into the digestive tract via the duodenum (the first section of small intestine beyond the stomach) (3).

How does TUDCA function in the body?

The microbial process is responsible for making TUDCA, along with many other compounds in the body (4).

The liver bile duct releases bile salts into the intestines. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is produced by microorganisms in the large intestine as a result of bile salt metabolization. It is then conjugated with a taurine molecule to produce TUDCA. Bile salts play an important role in this process in your body, which is supported by a healthy amount in your body (5, 6).

The average healthy individual makes very little TUDCA, recycling about 95% of their bile salts through enterohepatic circulation - that is, when bile passes through the intestines and returns to the liver through the portal vein. This process, however, can be slowed down by certain medications, poor diet, and a decrease in liver function (7).

How do UDCA Bile Salts differ from TUDCA Bile Salts?

The liver makes primary bile acids from cholesterol as a base. TUDCA is formed when UDCA is conjugated with taurine in the liver (via enterohepatic circulation). Additionally, this process prevents cell death (apoptosis) by mitigating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress (8).

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid is referred to as TUDCA while ursodeoxycholic acid is referred to as UDCA. UDCA is a common form of bile salt, but it is not the only one. UDCA is the first bile acid produced by the intestinal microbiota (gut flora). TUDCA is formed when UDCA metabolizes in the lower intestines by binding to taurine (9).

The best way to increase TUDCA levels

TUDCA is naturally produced by the body, but only in very small amounts, as the majority of your bile salts are recycled during digestion. You can further slow down natural TUDCA production by:

  • Yeast overgrowth, parasites, harmful bacteria, or parasitic infections can cause microbiome dysbiosis (10).
  • Excess free radicals and insufficient antioxidants cause stress on the liver (11).
  • Systemic inflammation.
  • Chronic stress disrupts the nervous system.
  • Gallbladder dysfunction.
  • TUDCA is needed to treat chronic diseases involving the liver, kidneys, brain, and intestines.

TUDCA supplementation is helpful when the liver does not produce enough bile salts, or when you want to introduce fresh bile salts to support digestion and detoxification (12).

Side Effects Associated with Using Tudca

Supplements containing TUDCA are generally considered safe when taken as directed. Some people report diarrhea when taking more than 1500 mg daily. There have been no other reported side effects associated with TUDCA besides that one complication.

TUDCA supplementation during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended because of limited research. A doctor should be consulted before using TUDCA if you have any underlying medical conditions (12,13,14,15,16).

Please consult your healthcare provider before making a decision about TUDCA.
